Year 9 students galvanise support for Haiti appeal

Year 9 students at the Queens School, Chester, certainly have the knack for fundraising. Prompted by the plight of the earthquake survivors in Haiti, teachers challenged the girls in their Personal and Social Education lessons to galvanise the school’s contribution to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s national fundraising effort.

Following a special assembly given by Deputy Head Irene Jones highlighting some of the historical and economic issues which have left Haiti in such a weak position to cope with the disaster, the school set a target to raise £1000 in the week.

The Year 9 girls researched the long term and emergency aid issues, producing information posters which were displayed around school (pictured) affording pupils and staff a chance to learn more and encourage generous giving. They certainly proved a remarkable success as the target was smashed. By the end of the week £2900 had been donated and the sum is set to grow as more money keeps coming in.
