Personal and Social Education
Personal and Social Education is taught in all years from 7 – 11. It is taught in small groups, which encourage each girl to participate in discussions.
Years 7 and 8 remain with the same member of staff all year, whilst other years work on a rotation basis to cover various subject areas.
The aims of the department are to encourage pupils to:
- Develop mutual respect and understanding
- Think about issues and make informed, responsible choices
- Be aware of and care for others and the environment
- Talk about feelings and be sensitive to the feelings of others
- Be constructively critical and questioning
- To consider citizenship
This is a non-examination subject but one which will provide a partnership between home and school and encourage parental interest and involvement. Some of our outside speakers are parents of past and present pupils.
The course involves professionals with expert knowledge to complement our teaching and outside speakers may include such personnel as:
- General Practitioner
- Health Advisor Sexual Health Clinic
- Blind Gentleman
- Cheshire Police
- Magistrates
- Prison Governor
- The Samaritans
- Chester Aid to the Homeless
- Journalist
- Drugs Intervention Service in Cheshire
- Careers Advisor
- Cheshire County Road Safety
The teaching topics include: sex education; health education; body image and self harm; stress management; drugs education; human rights; citizenship; discrimination and prejudice; effective decision making; careers education; money management; consumer studies; religious themes in art, literature, music and film; local and national government; the welfare state; homelessness; morals and ethics.
Outside speakers from The Drugs Intervention Service in Cheshire and St John’s Ambulance address small teaching groups on several occasions each year.
