Physics

Physics is the study of the world around us.

Physics is taught throughout the school by physics specialists. There are two full-time teachers of physics and one part time technician.

The department aims to give pupils the opportunity to:

  • Develop an understanding of physics, whilst appreciating its power and its limitations.
  • Develop their observational, numerical and investigative abilities.
  • Develop a thirst for further knowledge and to help them think logically.
  • Develop their understanding of the technological and environmental applications of physics.
  • Prepare each individual girl to achieve her maximum potential in examinations.

Physics is studied as a separate subject in years 7 to 11 and taught by specialist teachers in subject specific laboratories. ICT is used widely in the physics curriculum to support teaching and learning.

At GCSE level, the AQA Physics specification is followed. Pupils take their first module in year 10 and the two subsequent modules in year 11. Practical assessments take place throughout the course.

At A level, the new AQA Physics specification is followed.

The physics department enhances the teaching of the curriculum by offering various extra curricular activities:

  • A weekly physics clinic
  • A weekly astronomy club
  • Physics Challenge for GCSE students
  • Physics Olympiad for advanced level students.

This year the sixth form physicists enjoyed a very exciting and inspiring trip to CERN, the home of the world’s highest energy particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider.
