English

English at Queen’s is much more than just the Queen’s English

English is taught by five experienced teachers, all English graduates.

The aims of the department are:

  • To teach students to speak and write accurately, persuasively and creatively in a variety of situations and for different audiences.
  • To encourage a life-long interest in the written and spoken word
  • To help students to develop their taste in reading with the resulting acquisition of the moral and spiritual values which permeate literature.

English and English Literature are compulsory subjects up to GCSE.

At A level we follow courses in both English Language and English Literature.

Results in external examinations are very good. In 2009, 100% of candidates gained A or B grades in A level Literature and in A level Language the figure was 88%. At GCSE, 79% gained A* to A grades in English and 92% A* to A grades in English Literature. Five girls in the last 15 years have gone on to read English at Oxbridge and many others at a wide range of universities.

The Department organises numerous activities including help with the school play, public speaking, debating, a creative writing magazine and theatre trips.
