LATIN
Latin Lives On!
Often mistakenly described as a “dead language”, Latin lives on in countless areas of contemporary life, such as:
- Law
- Medicine/biological sciences
- English – where, for example, this famous war poem is still studied
Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori (Wilfred Owen) - Modern languages such as French, Italian, Portuguese & Spanish
Remember -
- nil satis nisi optimum – “only the best is enough” (Everton FC)
- audere est facere – “to dare is to do” (Tottenham Hotspur FC)
Girls who choose to study Latin begin the subject in Year 8. The Cambridge Latin Course is used, and the subject can be continued to GCSE, AS and A2 levels, where excellent results and many top grades are achieved.
CLASSICAL CIVILISATION
Do you want to see the real “Troy”?
Would you like to join the Time Team?
Are you fascinated by ancient history, mythology or philosophy?
Classical Civilisation, introduced as a taster course in Year 7, can be studied to GCSE, AS or A2 levels. This exciting option provides the opportunity to study the ancient world through the medium of English. Visit The Classics Pages to see the variety of topics offered by this subject.
Through the study of one or both of these subjects, the department aims to provide students with:
- Understanding of the structure of language
- Awareness of derivatives in English, leading to a wider English vocabulary and greater precision in its use
- Appreciation of our classical heritage in art, literature, philosophy and science
- Discussion of myth and its relevance as a medium of expressing difficulties and dilemmas of human life.
