Chemistry
Chemistry is life…….Life is chemistry
The aims of the department are:
- To educate the pupil in chemistry in the context of biological, physical and earth sciences and appropriate aspects of humanity;
- To create a teaching environment within which the pupil is encouraged to contribute her own views and experiences in order to develop her practical and theoretical understanding of chemistry in the wider context;
- To encourage awareness of the benefits of chemistry and a developing awareness of the importance of chemical knowledge and understanding for the survival and progress of humanity.
At GCSE, the AQA chemistry specification is followed. Students take their first module examination in Year 10, followed by two subsequent modules in year 11. Practical and investigative skills assessments take place throughout the course.
At A level, the AQA chemistry A level specification is followed.
The teaching of chemistry at The Queen's School is enhanced by our Science Club. Aimed at girls in Year 9, the club meets weekly throughout the year to perform experiments of all kinds from Howling Jelly Babies and Slime with a Twist to Crunchie Foam and Fake Stained Glass.
The Science Club hosts whole school events such as National Chemistry Week events in November, National Science Week events in March and we have even been to known to help out during special events in the library.
Girls also benefit from a vast array of opportunities to experience chemistry beyond the classroom:
- The Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at Liverpool John Moores University and The Salters’ Chemistry Camp are both offered to girls in Years 7-10.
- The sixth form chemists are catered for by the RSC Schools' Analyst Competition at Liverpool University, trips to lectures such as Fireworks, Stink Bombs and Magic Bullet Medicines at The Catalyst Museum in Widnes and visits to local pharmaceutical companies to see chemistry in action.
We also encourage girls to enter in the RSC Chemistry Olympiad at sixth form level.
